Over The Edge Event on WHAM

Rochester, N.Y. — Dozens of adventurous fundraisers took their support for The Arc to new heights Thursday, rappelling down the side of the Hyatt Regency in downtown Rochester.

The Arc Ontario and The Arc of Monroe teamed up for the "Over the Edge" fundraiser, challenging participants to descend about 170 feet down the hotel while raising money for programs and services supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Each participant was required to raise at least $1,000 to secure a spot in the event.

Among those going over the edge was Satchel Coen de Peck, an advocate and former president of The Arc Ontario's Speak Up Speak Out self-advocacy group. Dressed as Spider-Man, Coen de Peck rappelled down the hotel to represent his peers and raise awareness of The Arc's programs.

"I have my own personal superhero," said Satchel's mom, Cici Coen. "I'm just so proud of his willingness to do something so brave, but also to participate in the activities that support his life."

Several familiar Rochester faces also went over the edge, including Moose, the Rochester Amerks mascot, and Spikes, the Rochester Red Wings mascot.

Miriam Johnson, residential director at The Arc of Monroe, also participated despite having climacophobia, a fear of climbing or ascending.
